Day 2 of Washington D.C. (by Andy)

Our second day we wanted to see the White House and the National Mall. Our hotel was just a few blocks from the White House so we thought we'd walk there to start our day.

It was raining and we were soaked through by the time we'd made it the few blocks. On our tour the day before the tour guide told us that if the President is "home" there will always be snipers on the roof, there were snipers there on our day 1 and no snipers day 2, so either the President wasn't home or the snipers are afraid of the rain.

We walked the whole perimeter of the grounds and enjoyed the rain. We amused ourselves with silly faces and Melissa's instruction to "look cute" resulted in me standing with my head tilted to one side (Zoe looks cute when she does it, so I gave it a try too).

Sorry for the self portrait photos, but the kind middle eastern couple who offered to take a few pictures for us somehow managed to miss getting the White House in the background (the first picture on this page)

Our first stop on the National Mall was the Smithsonian of flight, two years into our marriage and I think this was the 3rd flight museum I've taken Melissa to. She is such a trooper.

After an hour in the museum we popped back outside to find blue skies and sun, which was great for two soggy travelers.

We also saw the national portrait gallery.

And Q*bert's house, solid metal trees, and various other outdoor sculptures. It was fun to see all the beauty, but it makes me wonder... how quickly would we repay the national debt if Melissa and I (and the other thousands there) had each just paid $5 for the whole day of touring?

Melissa was a little more excited for the Smithsonian - Natural History

We decided the best souvenir for my nephews would be something interactive, like a purple lightening storm! They loved it, I even got to teach them that by putting a coin on the glass you can draw the electricity out of the ball and shock your finger.
