5/29/15 Hey, that building looks like a cross.
As we flew in to Southampton we were watching out the windows and commented on the big church shaped like a cross. A gentleman on the flight told us it was Winchester Cathedral, the one with the flooded crypt. We had to know more. He explained that the crypt flooded and the water was threatening the structure until a scuba diver drained it. We all talked it through and decided to add a stop at Winchester during our drive to London.
Luckily Melissa knew the secret knock.
I guess it is pretty tall, not as tall as some skyscrapers back in the US, but pretty tall.
The building is amazing! Everything is ornate and detailed.
Right down to the dead guys on the outside of the coffins, they are all so well carved.
The birth of Christ. Joseph and Mary holding the child, surrounded by 6 saints.
Diving helmet, on display in the cathedral, to commemorate William Walker (diver who saved the cathedral). The foundations were failing and the high water table prevented traditional crews from trenching under the foundation to sure it up with cement, so he did it in the water.
Down to the crypt, it is so spooky that it caused the autofocus on Melissa's camera to fail.
This statue ends up almost submerged when the crypt fills with water, just a little damp today though.
Jane Austen was buried at Winchester. Not because of her amazing writing, but because her father was famous enough.
A fun, unplanned detour.
We drove in to London (CRAZY!!) and dropped the 4 at The Forester. We then took Grandma with us to Glyn and Brendan's. The other 3 joined us via their first ever tube ride. We had dinner and then went for a short walk with Brendan (short for Brendan, everyone else was exhausted).
Janell found a house she'd like to buy on the walk.
Now, time to get a good night's sleep. We are heading for London in the morning!
