January 24th 2022 Pu'uhonua o Honaunau historical site and Two Step Beach
Melissa and I kept asking, "Where is the history and culture?" Well we found some of it at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, a National Historic Park. It was mostly outdoors, but because it was federal land we all wore masks. It was a fun morning looking around the park.
"The ocean is calling me and I must answer"
Appreciating the view for a moment.
The kids learning the ancient black shells vs white shells checkers game, I can't remember the real name.
Oh yeah, Melissa and I went together.
The kids watching a traditional wood worker carving tiki. He said they aren't meant to represent any individual person, but allow us to envision the powers of creation themselves. It was neat to see him work, and I was very proud of the kids. Nobody asked why he was "naked" or "wearing a diaper."
Some of the older tiki statues.
Enjoying a moment of peace... Hi Mya!
An intrepid explorer demonstrating his discoveries.
After finishing in the historical park, we went next door to Two Step beach. Seriously, it was the next parking lot north. Black sand, a large shallow wading area protected by some rock outcroppings and a cool two step entrance into a much deeper ocean area for snorkeling.
Lunch time, the beach area was quite small, but it was enough for our little group.
After some time in the little alcove we went to Two Step. Melissa is on top, the woman in black is moving down to the second step and Eli has just jumped off of it. It is a nice way to enter the water, as the waves come in and out you can get up and down without needing much strength to pull yourself out.
Getting ready to explore...
"Forget this! I don't have the nice mask, the waves are too big, and I can't feel the bottom!" Melissa tried a few times, but just wasn't comfortable with a regular mask and snorkel. After Jeremy and Eli finished she switched to the Jeremy's nice mask but couldn't get it to seal while floating in the water. There were amazing fish here, all colors and sizes, but she couldn't enjoy it while feeling claustrophobia and at risk of being swept away.
So we came back and sent Trish with Mya and Jeremy.
Kids enjoying the beach.
Proud of their creations.
After a long day out, we played a few games after dinner.
While Melissa and Trisha went "souvenir shopping." Speaking of which, how does anyone afford to live here? Yikes, $8.50 for milk, $7 for a box of my cereal?
